History of the Marathi Community in Mauritius
Migration and Early Settlement
The history of the Marathi community in Mauritius dates back to the period of migration from India, particularly from the state of Maharashtra.
Community Development
Over generations, the Marathi community has preserved its language, customs, festivals, and cultural practices development.
Migration and Early Settlement
The history of the Marathi community in Mauritius is deeply intertwined with the broader story of migration and nation-building that shaped the island. Mauritius, situated in the South-West Indian Ocean, was successively colonised by the Dutch, French, and British. Throughout these periods, waves of migration transformed the island into a diverse and multicultural society.
Following the abolition of slavery in 1835, the expanding sugar industry required a new workforce, leading to the introduction of the indentured labour system. Thousands of workers from various parts of the world arrived in Mauritius, with the majority coming from India. Among them were Marathi-speaking immigrants from the Bombay Presidency, particularly from the regions of Konkan, Ratnagiri, Rajapur, Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur in present-day Maharashtra.

Historical records maintained by the Mahatma Gandhi Institute indicate that Marathi immigrants began arriving in Mauritius as early as 1834. Between 1835 and 1910, more than 40,000 labourers embarked from the port of Bombay and made the journey to Mauritius in search of a better future. Many settled permanently on the island, laying the foundations of what would become a vibrant and enduring Marathi community.
Early Marathi settlers worked primarily in the sugar estates under the indenture system, enduring difficult conditions while striving to build new lives for their families. Despite the challenges of displacement and adaptation, they remained deeply connected to their language, customs, religious practices, and cultural values. Through determination and resilience, they established close-knit communities that preserved their identity while contributing significantly to the social and economic development of Mauritius.
Over generations, Marathi Mauritians became an integral part of the nation's multicultural fabric. They contributed to agriculture, education, public service, business, culture, and community leadership, helping to shape the modern Mauritius we know today. Their commitment to preserving their heritage ensured the continuity of Marathi traditions, festivals, devotional practices, and linguistic heritage across successive generations.
Today, the descendants of these early pioneers continue to honour the legacy of their ancestors. The story of Marathi migration to Mauritius is not only one of perseverance and survival, but also of cultural preservation, community unity, and meaningful contribution to the development of the nation.
