Preserving Our Marathi Heritage
The Marathi community in Mauritius represents more than a century and a half of resilience, identity and cultural continuity. Descendants of the early Marathi indentured labourers who arrived from the Konkan region, Western Maharashtra and the Deccan carried with them far more than their personal belongings—they brought a civilisation built upon language, devotion, courage, family values and community life.
Despite the challenges of plantation life, these pioneers safeguarded their traditions through collective worship, festivals, folk arts, music, storytelling and the Marathi language. Their determination ensured that future generations would continue to recognise their roots while proudly contributing to the multicultural identity of Mauritius.
Today, the Mauritius Marathi Mandali Federation (MMMF), together with its affiliated mandalis across the island, continues this mission by preserving, promoting and transmitting Marathi heritage to present and future generations.

Through Marathi, generations continue to discover the works of Sant Dnyaneshwar, Sant Namdev, Sant Eknath and Sant Tukaram, whose teachings remain relevant even today.
The Mauritius Marathi Mandali Federation, the Marathi Sahitya Parishad, the Maratha Mandir and the Ministry of Education actively support initiatives that encourage the learning and everyday use of Marathi among children and young adults, ensuring that the language continues to thrive within Mauritian society.
Performing Arts and Folk Traditions
Marathi culture is renowned for its vibrant artistic traditions.
From Lavani dance and Powada performances celebrating the heroism of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, to devotional Bhajans, Gondhal, Bharud and Kirtan, every performance carries history, emotion and spiritual meaning.
Music has always united the Marathi community, allowing stories, values and faith to be passed from one generation to another.
Many affiliated mandalis continue to nurture these traditions by training young performers and organising cultural programmes throughout the year.

Every festival, procession and religious gathering is organised collectively by volunteers who dedicate their time and energy in the spirit of Seva.

The Mauritius Marathi Mandali Federation serves as the umbrella organisation bringing together affiliated mandalis across the island, fostering collaboration, cultural exchange and a shared commitment to preserving our common heritage.
