From the Journey of our Ancestors to the Spirit of the Mawlas

Siddhivinayak Mitra Mandal of Tyack is not merely an association; it is the continuation of a sacred journey — a journey of courage, sacrifice, devotion, and cultural pride that began with our ancestors who crossed the oceans generations ago.

Our roots trace back to the arrival of the early Marathi immigrants from Maharashtra, India, who came to Mauritius during the period of indentured labour. After a long and difficult voyage, many of these ancestors were sent to different estates across the island, with several Marathi families settling at Château Bénarès Camp in the southern region of Mauritius.

Although they arrived in a foreign land with very little material possession, they carried within their hearts an invaluable heritage — their faith in their deities, the teachings of their elders, the Marathi language, bhajans, rituals, festivals, and the proud spirit of the Mawlas of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Life at Château Bénarès Camp was built on hard work, unity, and mutual support. After long days of labour, our ancestors gathered as one extended family, keeping their traditions alive through prayers, storytelling, devotional songs, and cultural practices. These gatherings became the foundation upon which future generations would continue to build their Marathi identity.

Among these families, the Babboo, Rama, Seetaram, Narayen, Yessoo, and Gunnoo families remained closely united by a common devotion towards Lord Ganesh. Their annual celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi became more than a religious event — it became a symbol of remembrance, gratitude, and connection with their ancestral land of Maharashtra.

Generation after generation, elders transmitted their values and traditions to their children. What started as a family devotion gradually transformed into a wider movement dedicated to preserving Marathi culture and spirituality.

This dedication was proudly recognised when Mrs. Heerabye Yessoo received the prestigious Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Award in 2026, honouring her remarkable contribution towards the preservation and promotion of our Marathi heritage.

Today, Siddhivinayak Mitra Mandal is widely respected for its cultural and spiritual contributions. Our renowned Bhajan Mandali continues to spread devotion across the region through traditional bhajans, carrying forward the same spiritual energy inherited from our forefathers.

The Mandal also proudly preserves the sacred tradition of Gondhal, an important part of Maharashtrian spiritual culture. With our own Gondhali and our own Guruji performing pujas, religious ceremonies, and guiding devotees, we continue to maintain the authenticity of the practices passed down by our ancestors.

As time evolved, a new generation of dedicated members from Tyack, La Flora, Batimarais, Rivière des Anguilles, Britannia, and neighbouring regions accepted the responsibility of protecting and expanding this heritage. They transformed the family legacy into a registered association, welcoming members of the Hindu faith while keeping Marathi culture at its heart.

In 2019, the Executive Committee approved the affiliation of Siddhivinayak Mitra Mandal with the Mauritius Marathi Mandali Federation (MMMF), marking a new chapter of collaboration and contribution towards the preservation of Marathi culture at a national level.

Today, Siddhivinayak Mitra Mandal proudly stands as a bridge between past and future — carrying the memories of Château Bénarès Camp, honouring the sacrifices of our ancestors, respecting the dedication of our elders, and inspiring our youth to protect this priceless inheritance.

Our ancestors came with determination.
They survived through unity.
They preserved through devotion.
And today, we continue their mission.
